A driver suspected of fatally running over a 17-year-old student in Spain was arrested on a plane while trying to flee to Argentina, the Guardia Civil announced Tuesday.
The 53-year-old man, with dual Argentine and Paraguayan nationality and resident in the outskirts of Madrid, was arrested at 0015 local time (23H15 GMT) at the Madrid-Barajas airport on board a plane bound for Buenos Aires, he told the AFP a spokeswoman for the Civil Guard.
He is suspected of having run over a Mercedes at the wheel of a 17-year-old student at Fuente el Saz de Jarama, some 30 km north of Madrid, and having fled, said the spokeswoman.
The corpse of the young woman who was going to take the bus to go to the institute was found on the shoulder for a few hours after the hit. “With the blow of the car, he had to be aware that something had run over,” said the spokeswoman.
The remains of the vehicle allowed the driver to be found, the Civil Guard said in a statement. Once at his home, the policemen learned from his niece that he had just booked a flight to Argentina that same night.
The forces of order accuse him of homicide due to imprudence, omission of duty of help and reckless driving.
