Some 50 countries, led by Brazil, launched on Wednesday the signing of a treaty banning atomic weapons, symbolic significance because of the boycott of the text by the major nuclear powers.

The treaty, drafted in a few months, was adopted in July by 122 countries. It will enter into force once it has been ratified by 50 countries.
